Geocaching in Weston-super-Mare
So, whenever I ask for ideas of FREE family activities, someone always pipes up with Geocaching!
I must be honest, I still don’t really have much of a clue as to what it is. So if you bear with me for a short while I am off to do my research………
…………well for a start there is a website and apparently I already have an account so maybe I already know more than I thought.
Geocaching is apparently the worlds largest game of hide & seek which to be fair does sound quite exciting and right up my children's street, especially the youngest who loves a challenge and is very determined when on a mission.
Participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device to hide and seek containers called ‘geocaches’ at different locations all around the world.
There are millions of Geocaches in around 200 countries worldwide, it is enjoyed by adults and children and a great excuse to get outside an explore the area you are in whether it is urban or rural.
You can log onto the Geocaching website, put in your location and it brings up a list of Geocaches. Why not give it a go!
To get started you can open a basic free account, as I appear to have done some time ago and use the free app to search for Geocaches in your area or wherever you want to explore.
There is a Geocaching Association of Great Britain which has a very useful website with lots of information and useful tips too.
Somerset Wildlife Trust also have some useful information on their website about where are the best places to go Geocaching in Somerset, specifically to avoid the disturbance of any fragile eco-systems.
I have downloaded the app, so tomorrow we will be donning our welly boots and be off in search of Geocaches!
We’ll be sure to let you know how we get on…..
If you have any hints and tips or great places to visit for Geocaching please get in touch to tell us about it.
